Movie Synopsis:

Marvin Rees wants to run for mayor in Bristol. He is eloquent, ambitious and he is mixed-race. Growing up in Bristol's ghettos meant food on the table was not always easy to come by. He saw his black and white family, his friends and community suffering from poverty and exclusion. Now in his 40's and with children of his own, he wants the power to break the cycles of poverty and injustice he's experienced first hand.

The city Marvin wants to lead has a history on race that still echoes into today. It once grew rich from trading Africans as slaves, sparked a UK civil rights fight to parallel the infamous struggles of the sixties in the US. Then Bristol began an uprising in the inner-city that spread race riots to Britain's other black ghettos.

Against this historical backdrop Marvin Rees steps into the world of politics. How will he cope with rejection, failure and a deep inner struggle on his journey to the biggest success of his life - becoming the first black mayor of a major European city.

Genre:

Documentary

Language:

Runtime:

1 hour 30 minutes (approx.)

Movie Synopsis:

Following the success of Fortune's Wheel, director Joe Lee focuses now on another Dublin neighbourhood, Inchicore, to tell the extraordinary story of life as lived over 200 years in Richmond Barracks, Keogh Square and St Michael's Estate.

Located a little over three miles from Dublin city centre, the area has seen dramatic changes over this period, both in the built environment and in the population which has variously included British army troops, 1916 prisoners and, most recently, regular citizens.

The primary storytellers in the film are the people who have lived and grown up here. By telling the intimate stories of these buildings and streets, vividly illustrated through personal and community archives, the film reveals a social and political history of Dublin and offers a timely reflection on Ireland's changing urban landscape.

After being forced to flee war-torn Syria, Adnan and his wife Bana are separated on route through France. Adnan faces the crippling challenge of living in 'The Jungle'. His only option is to risk his life in a series of desperate attempts to cross the channel, hoping he will be reunited with his wife. Back in Syria, Adnan was a teacher, an ordinary man, a law abiding pacifist. Together with Yousef and Mima, friends he makes on the camp, they are prepared to risk everything in search of another life. Adnan's friendships with fellow refugees, Yousef and Mima, strengthen through their shared experiences on the camp. Their risks begin to mount, threats from police, fellow refugees and ruthlessly exploitative traffickers are starting to close in. Set against the backdrop of the refugee camp known as 'The Jungle' in Calais the film combines documentary footage and real-life interviews with a dramatic narrative to give a voice to refugees that is seldom heard.
